Forward deployed engineers for internal tools

Use cases / Internal tools

Your operations team runs on spreadsheets, shared inboxes and direct database edits, because product work always wins the sprint. Forward deployed engineers for internal tools join your team, part of the week or for a fixed period, and build what that team needs. You tell us who you need. We send people who fit.

  • No deposit to get started
  • Every requirement read by us
  • A best-fit shortlist, not a pile of CVs
  • One agreement, one invoice

Why internal tools get skipped

Ops needs a tool engineering needs the sprint

Internal tools rarely make the roadmap, so people work around the gap. They copy data between systems, run SQL by hand, and ask an engineer for a quick fix every week. The cost is real but spread thin.

A forward deployed engineer sits with the people who do the work and watches how they do it. Then they build the smallest tool that removes the worst part. Often that includes an AI step, but only where it earns its place.

What the work covers

What forward deployed engineers for internal tools build

  • Admin and back-office panels Safe screens for the actions people now do in the database, with permissions and an audit log.
  • Review and approval queues One place to see what needs a decision, with the context pulled in and AI filling in what it can.
  • Assistants on your own data Question-and-answer tools over your internal systems and docs, limited to what each team may see.
  • Reporting people actually open The few numbers each team checks daily, in the tool they already use.

How hiring an engineer for your tools works

  1. 01

    Send your requirement

Tell us the team, the workflow that hurts most and the person on that team who signs the tool off. It is free, and there is no deposit.

  2. 02

    Get a shortlist

We read every requirement ourselves and look for people who fit. Then we send a shortlist: each person's CV and a short note on why they fit.

  3. 03

    Talk to them and choose

You talk to whoever you like and choose. Look for someone who has built tools for operations teams and enjoys talking to them. You do not have to hire anyone.

  4. 04

    Pay only when someone starts

One agreement and one invoice with us, on terms agreed in writing before anything starts. Talent never pays.

Constraints

Internal does not mean anything goes

  • A man in a navy jumper smiling at a meeting table with coffee and a notebook
Access and audit Internal tools often have more power than customer-facing ones. Role-based access and an audit log are standard.
  • A man in a navy jumper smiling at a meeting table with coffee and a notebook
Change control If you hold a security certification, internal tools sit inside the same change and access controls as everything else.
  • A small team around a meeting table, one standing to talk while the others listen
Maintainability Built with tools your team already knows, whether a low-code builder or your main stack, so it survives after handover.
  • A man smiling across a table while a colleague in the foreground talks
Data exposure Assistants see only what the user could already see in the source systems.

Low-code on its own or a forward deployed engineer

Ops team with a low-code tool

  • Fast for simple forms and tables
  • Breaks down on tricky integrations and logic
  • Built by whoever has spare time
  • Hard to secure and review as it grows

Forward deployed engineer

  • Uses low-code where it fits and code where it does not
  • Handles the integrations and permissions properly
  • Works directly with the ops team every week
  • Leaves docs so your engineers can maintain it

FAQ

Questions people ask

Should we use Retool or a similar tool?

If you already use one, often yes. If not, the engineer recommends what fits your team, which might be a small app in your main stack.

Can one engineer build several tools?

Yes, one after another. Start with the most painful one, ship it, then move on.

Will this distract our product engineers?

Very little. The engineer needs access, a code reviewer and the odd answer. That is the point of bringing them in.

Can the tool use AI?

Where it helps, for example summarising a case or drafting a reply. Add it when it removes real work, not by default.
