Short answer

Build versus sustain

Customer success engineers, sometimes called support engineers or technical account engineers, sort out issues, unblock customer developers and keep accounts healthy across a portfolio.

Palantir runs both kinds of role, which makes the line easy to see. Its Forward Deployed Software Engineers own projects end to end with one customer. Its Forward Deployed Enablement Engineers sit with customer success teams, triage support requests and join an on-call rotation.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is customer success engineering a path into FDE work?

It can be. You learn the product deeply and work with customer engineers daily. The gap is usually owning a build end to end, so look for projects where you ship a tool or integration yourself.

Do FDEs do support?

For what they built, yes. Most FDEs own their deployments in production, which includes fixing them. They are not usually on a general support queue.
