FDE vs sales engineer
Comparison
A sales engineer helps win the deal. A forward deployed engineer (FDE) makes the deal work after it is signed. The FDE vs sales engineer mix-up happens because both jobs are technical and customer-facing.

Short answer
Before the signature versus after it
Sales engineers, also called solutions engineers or pre-sales engineers, run demos, answer technical questions during the sale and build proofs of concept. They often carry a quota or a share of one.
FDEs own production systems in the customer's environment after the sale. An analysis of FDE postings found none carried a sales quota. Andreessen Horowitz has called the FDE title "title arbitrage" for jobs once called solutions or integration engineers, so read each posting carefully.

FAQ
Questions people ask
Is a forward deployed engineer a sales role?
Not in the postings we read at OpenAI, Anthropic and Palantir. They ask for production engineering and measure delivery and adoption. Some FDEs help shape deals, but they do not carry a quota.
Can a sales engineer become an FDE?
Yes, if you can show production engineering. Sales engineers already have discovery and executive communication. Add a system you built, deployed and supported, and you have the core of an FDE portfolio.
Which should a company hire first?
If deals are not closing because buyers doubt the product works for them, a sales engineer. If deals close but customers never reach production, an FDE.
