FDE vs software engineer

Comparison

Both write production code. FDE vs software engineer comes down to who the code is for. A software engineer builds one product for many customers. A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds whatever one customer needs to get that product into real use, often at their site.

Short answer

Same craft, different customer

Palantir, where the FDE role started, runs its engineers on separate tracks. Dev is "one capability, many customers". Delta, its original name for the FDE, is "one customer, many capabilities". That is still the clearest way to tell the jobs apart.

A software engineer goes deep on one part of the product and ships it to everyone. An FDE goes wide inside one customer: data pipelines, integrations, a custom app, an LLM workflow, whatever stands between the customer and a working system.

Which one suits you

Pick FDE if you

  • Like seeing the person who uses what you built
  • Enjoy switching between data, backend, frontend and AI in one week
  • Are fine with travel and messy systems you did not design
  • Want to learn how businesses actually run

Pick software engineering if you

  • Want deep ownership of one system over years
  • Prefer long focus time over meetings
  • Care about scale, performance and clean architecture
  • Would rather not travel

Moving between the jobs

Most FDEs start as software engineers. The gap is rarely coding. It is discovery, scoping and writing for people who are not engineers. The AI labs ask for customer-facing experience on top of engineering, so the earlier you add customer time, the easier the switch.

Going the other way is common too. Field time shows an engineer where the product breaks, which is exactly what product teams want to hear.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is a forward deployed engineer a software engineer?

Yes. Every FDE posting we read asks for production code, and Palantir calls the role Forward Deployed Software Engineer. The difference is who the code is for and where it runs.

Do FDEs write less code than software engineers?

Usually somewhat less, because discovery, customer meetings and travel take time. The code they write tends to be broader: integrations, pipelines and apps rather than one deep component.

Who earns more, an FDE or a software engineer?

It depends on the company and the level. The FDE salary guide has posted pay by company and level.

Is FDE vs SDE the same question?

Yes. SDE (software development engineer) is Amazon's and Microsoft's name for a software engineer. Everything on this page applies.

What about full stack developers?

An FDE is close to a full stack developer who also owns the customer relationship and the data plumbing. Smaller companies in particular expect FDEs to own frontend and backend.
