FDE vs product manager

Comparison

Both spend a lot of time with customers. FDE vs product manager comes down to building versus deciding. A product manager decides what the product should do for many customers. A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds what one customer needs now, and brings back what they learned.

Short answer

One writes the roadmap, the other writes the code

A product manager owns the "what" and "why" for a product. They talk to customers to find patterns, then set priorities for engineers. They rarely ship code.

An FDE owns delivery inside one account. They do discovery too, but then they build, deploy and support the system themselves. OpenAI asks its FDEs to "share field feedback that helps Research and Product understand where the models succeed", which is input for product, not the product job itself.

Where each one is the right call

A company needs an FDE when

  • A signed customer cannot get value without custom integration
  • The product is new and every deployment is a little different
  • Someone has to own the result on site, including bugs

A company needs a product manager when

  • Requests from many customers have to be turned into one plan
  • Engineering needs clear priorities and trade-offs
  • Pricing, positioning and launches need an owner

How the roles work together

The best FDE teams turn what works in the field into something reusable. OpenAI's posting asks FDEs to turn working patterns into "tools, playbooks, or building blocks". A product manager decides which of those become product. When this works, each new customer needs less custom work than the last.

If you are an FDE thinking about product management, your field notes are your portfolio. If you are a product manager thinking about FDE work, the gap is production engineering, and the FDE roadmap covers it.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can an FDE become a product manager?

Yes. FDEs see where the product breaks with real users, which is the core of product work. Palantir's Deployment Strategist role, which sits next to FDEs, already mixes field work with product input.

Is a forward deployed engineer a technical product manager?

No. A technical product manager still mostly writes specs. An FDE writes and deploys the code, and owns it in production.

Do FDEs report to product?

Usually not. At OpenAI, FDEs sit in a Forward Deployed Engineering team that works with Product, Research and go-to-market teams. At Anthropic they sit in Applied AI.
