The forward deployed engineer career path
Candidate guide
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds software inside a customer's team. This is where the forward deployed engineer career path leads once you have the job: the levels, and the moves FDEs make after time in the field.

Overview
A young ladder with clear rungs at the top
Many FDE postings do not show a level in the title. Where titles do show a level, the duties grow from owning one deployment to setting patterns for many.
Palantir says it celebrates individual strengths "rather than rely on traditional career ladders". Expect your path to depend more on the deployments you own than on a fixed promotion grid.

Where FDEs go next
- FDE management OpenAI and Anthropic both hire FDE managers, and both ask for experience managing customer-facing engineers.
- Product and core engineering FDEs feed field insight to product teams and can move into core product roles.
- Applied AI leadership Palantir pitches its Forward Deployed AI Engineer role to people who aspire to be "an entrepreneur or an Applied AI leader".
- Founding a company Owning results with customers is close to running a startup. FDE work is often compared to a startup CTO role.
- Fractional FDE work Experienced FDEs also work part of the week for a company, directly or through us.

FAQ
Questions people ask
Is FDE a dead end?
No. The skills transfer to product, leadership and founding: shipping fast, owning customers and reading a business. The risk is staying on one type of deployment too long without growing your scope.
How long do people stay in FDE roles?
We have not found reliable published data on how long FDEs stay. Treat any figure you see without a source with caution.
Can I go from FDE back to software engineering?
Yes. Palantir runs field and product tracks side by side, and moving between them is a known path.
