Pros and cons at a glance

Pros

  • Demand: AI labs and cloud companies are building FDE teams
  • Learning speed: new industries and systems on every deployment
  • Visible impact: you see people use what you built
  • Strong exits into product, leadership and founding

Cons

  • Travel: common in posted roles
  • Pressure to solve customer problems in short time frames
  • Messy systems you did not design and cannot rewrite
  • Less deep technical ownership than a product team
  • Title inflation: some roles are sales jobs renamed

The case for

The market is growing, and not only at AI labs. AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud have all announced FDE-style groups or hiring plans.

The work also compounds. Each deployment teaches a new business, a new stack and a new group of people. FDE responsibilities are often compared to a startup CTO's.

The case against

Some engineers find the role undesirable because of the travel and the pressure to solve customer problems quickly. If you need long, quiet focus time or cannot travel, the job will wear on you.

Watch for renamed roles. Andreessen Horowitz has called the FDE title "title arbitrage" for jobs once called solutions or integration engineers. Read the posting for production code and on-call ownership.

Questions people ask

Is forward deployed engineering a fad?

The title may change, but the work is not new: engineers embedded with customers to make complex software stick. Palantir made it a standard job title, and the AI labs and cloud companies copied it.

Is FDE stressful?

It can be, around launches and incidents. The stress is customer-facing, which suits some people and drains others.
