The role in one paragraph
A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer who works inside a customer's organisation to get a product, often an AI system, into daily use. They find the real problem, write the code, put it live and tell their own product team what they learned.
If you would rather not hire one yourself, we can help. You tell us what you need, and we send people who fit.

| Works with | Customer engineers, domain teams and executives on one side. Product, research, engineering and sales on the other. |
| Experience asked | From early career at Palantir to senior roles at OpenAI and Google. Each post states its own minimum. |
| Languages named | Python everywhere. Then TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, C++ or similar. |

Forward deployed engineer responsibilities
These duties show up across the posts we read.
-
Discovery and scoping Before any code, learn the customer's workflow, data and limits. OpenAI says its engineers own discovery, technical scoping, system design, build and production rollout. -
Building production software Ship real systems, not demos, inside the customer's environment. Palantir's engineers build custom applications for customer needs and work with very large data. -
Owning delivery end to end Run the project, not only the code. Set milestones, spot risks early and take a first prototype to stable production. -
Working with people at every level Pair with a data engineer in the morning and explain a trade-off to an executive in the afternoon. Palantir lists work with customer stakeholders from technical teams to executives. -
Turning field work into product Turn what worked into tools and playbooks others can reuse, and share what customers need with product and research. OpenAI and Anthropic both ask for this. -
Travel and on-site work Spend real time at customer sites. Anthropic says its engineers travel often to build in person with customers.

Do forward deployed engineers code?
Yes, and the posts are blunt about it. Salesforce says production experience is required and a builder mindset is non-negotiable. Palantir asks for a strong coder. OpenAI wants people who write and review production-grade code across frontend and backend.
The difference from a normal engineering job is not less code. It is code written closer to the customer, often in their systems, with more switching between tasks.
Forward deployed engineer skills
Technical skills
- Python, plus one more language such as TypeScript or Java
- Full-stack delivery: APIs, front ends, back ends and the glue between them
- Data engineering: pipelines, storage and messy real-world data
- For AI roles, building with large language models: prompting, agents and evaluation
- System design: fitting into enterprise systems through APIs and events
Customer and delivery skills
- Discovery: asking the questions that reveal the real problem
- Scoping: cutting a vague request into something that can ship
- Clear communication with engineers and executives
- Comfort with ambiguity, and a high level of ownership
- Calm judgement when the stakes are high
Requirements and qualifications by employer
| Employer | Experience | Education | Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palantir | Open to early-career engineers, with new graduate tracks | A strong engineering background, such as computer science, maths, physics or data science | Some travel |
| Deloitte | Engineering experience plus time shipping generative AI | A bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent | Experience with a frontier generative AI platform |
| Anthropic (London) | Years in a technical, customer-facing role | A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience | Production LLM experience and regular travel |
| OpenAI | Years of experience, including customer-facing work | Not stated in the post | Hybrid office work and regular travel |
| Google Cloud | Years of software development in Python or similar, more for the senior level | A bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience | A generative AI focus |
Taken from each company's own job post. Each post states its exact minimums.
What forward deployed engineer interviews test
Harvard's career services guide describes a typical loop. It has a recruiter screen, a hiring manager screen, a practical coding round, system design, an open-ended case, a client simulation and a behavioural round. It calls the open-ended case the hardest round.
So the job and the interview test the same things: coding, breaking down a vague problem and working with a customer. Our interview questions page has practice for each round.

| Job title | Forward Deployed Engineer |
| About the role | You will work directly with [customer type] to take [product or model] from first prototype to a system people use every day. You will sit with the people who own the problem, write the code that solves it, and bring what you learn back to our product and engineering teams. |
| What you will do | Run discovery with customer teams before writing code. Scope the work and agree what done means. Build and ship production software inside the customer's environment. Own deployments from prototype to stable production, including evaluation, monitoring and handover. Make trade-offs between scope, speed and quality, and explain them. Turn repeated work into reusable tools. Tell product and engineering what customers need. Travel to customer sites [share of time]. |
| What you bring | [Years] of building and shipping production software. Strong Python and at least one of TypeScript, JavaScript, Java or similar. Experience working directly with customers on technical projects. Comfort turning a vague problem into a scoped plan and a working system. Clear writing and speaking for technical and non-technical people. [For AI roles] Hands-on experience building with LLMs: prompting, retrieval, tool use or agents, and evaluation. |
| Nice to have | Background in [industry]. Experience with enterprise systems such as [system names]. A former founder, consultant or solutions engineer who still writes code every day. |
| Pay and logistics | Base salary: [range] per year, plus [equity or bonus]. Location: [city, hybrid policy or remote]. Travel: [share of time]. |
| How we interview | A recruiter screen. A practical coding exercise based on real work, not puzzles. A case where you break an open-ended customer problem into a plan. A customer simulation where you present and handle pushback. A values and team fit conversation. |
