How to write a forward deployed engineer resume

Candidate guide

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds software inside a customer's team. A forward deployed engineer resume, or CV, has to prove you ship production code and that you own results with a customer. Most engineering resumes only prove the first.

The brief

Write for the words FDE postings actually use

FDE job descriptions tend to name the same things: Python, working with stakeholders, customer-facing work, travel, APIs, agents and LLMs.

That list is your checklist. If you have done the work, make sure the words are on the page, inside bullets that show results, not in a list of skills.

Tell us the role and the hours. We send you a shortlist of people who fit.

Build your forward deployed engineer resume step by step

  1. 01

    Lead with a short summary

Say what you build and for whom. For example: a backend engineer who has taken LLM features from prototype to production with enterprise customers.

  2. 02

    Rewrite bullets as results

Use this order: the problem, what you built, who used it, and the measure that moved. "Built X" is only part of a bullet.

  3. 03

    Show customer ownership

Name the people you worked with by role, the discovery you ran and the decisions you made. Use "I", not "we".

  4. 04

    Show production, not demos

Deploys, on-call duty, incident fixes, evals and monitoring. These separate an FDE from a hackathon builder.

  5. 05

    Cut to one page

Drop coursework if you have work experience. Drop tools you cannot discuss in depth.

Weak versus strong FDE bullets

WeakStrong
Built a RAG chatbot using LangChainShipped a retrieval assistant for the support team; built an eval set from [N] real tickets and cut wrong answers from [X] to [Y] before rollout
Worked with customers on integrationsRan discovery with a client's finance and IT leads, scoped a small first version, and connected their ERP export to our API with safe retries
Responsible for deploymentsOwned the production rollout in the customer's VPC, wrote the runbook and handled the first incidents myself

Templates, not real candidates. Fill the brackets with your own figures, and only figures you can explain.

Experience that counts as customer-facing

  • Consulting or agency work Client delivery is the closest match to FDE work.
  • Support or solutions engineering Debugging live customer systems shows the right instincts.
  • Founding or freelancing Anthropic's posting encourages former technical founders to apply.
  • Internal tools for real users Building for another team inside your company counts if you ran the discovery.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do I need a separate resume for FDE roles?

Yes. A standard software engineering resume hides the customer work that FDE hiring managers look for. Move it up and make it specific.

What format do FDE employers want?

Follow each posting. Palantir's FDSE internship, for example, asks for a resume in PDF format plus answers to application questions.

Should I list certifications?

Only if they are relevant and recent. None of the FDE postings we read ask for one. A linked project with a short write-up does more.

Should I include a portfolio link?

Yes. Link a few case studies or repositories a reviewer can understand in minutes.
