How to interview forward deployed engineers

Buyer guide

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) works inside a customer's team, so a standard engineering interview misses much of what makes one good. Here is how to interview forward deployed engineers, with a loop and a rubric built for the job.

  • No deposit to get started
  • Every requirement read by us
  • A best-fit shortlist, not a pile of CVs
  • One agreement, one invoice

What to test

Test the job, not the algorithm

Public accounts of FDE interview loops describe several stages: screens, practical coding, system design, a decomposition case, a client simulation and behavioural questions, sometimes with a take-home.

You do not need all of them. You need evidence that they ship production code, that they scope before they build, and that customers trust them.

Tell us the role and the hours. We send you a shortlist of people who fit.

Sample prompts you can use

  • Decomposition A regional distributor wants to use AI to cut late deliveries. They have order, warehouse and carrier data in separate systems. Scope the first phase.
  • Client simulation The project slipped because IT has not granted production access. The customer's VP is on the call. Tell them.
  • AI evaluation Our assistant answers policy questions for staff. How would you know it is good enough to roll out?

FAQ

Questions people ask

Should I use LeetCode-style questions for FDEs?

Sparingly. Practical coding in a realistic codebase predicts field work better. Published FDE interview guides describe the coding round as practical engineering, not algorithm puzzles.

Who should play the customer?

Someone who has been a real stakeholder, ideally from operations or product, not another engineer reading a script.

How long should the process take?

As short as you can make it. Good FDE candidates are in demand.
