Forward deployed engineers for logistics and supply chain

Industries / Logistics

Freight forwarders, logistics providers, brokers and shippers run on documents, emails and exceptions passed between many partners. Forward deployed engineers for logistics take one of those flows and automate it end to end. You tell us who you need, and we send people who fit.

  • No deposit to get started
  • Every requirement read by us
  • A best-fit shortlist, not a pile of CVs
  • One agreement, one invoice

Why logistics teams use FDEs

Every shipment is an inbox until someone automates it

Logistics margins depend on how many shipments one coordinator can handle. Most of their day goes on reading rate confirmations, bills of lading, commercial invoices and carrier emails. Then they retype them into a TMS.

A forward deployed engineer sits with those coordinators and learns the exceptions that matter. They build the extraction, matching and messaging that clears the routine work. People are left with the shipments that need judgement.

Tell us the role and the hours. We send you a shortlist of people who fit.

What FDEs fix

Logistics work an FDE can own

  • Shipping document extraction Bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists and rate confirmations turned into structured TMS entries. Low-confidence fields go to a person for review.
  • Exception and track-and-trace handling Reading carrier updates and emails, spotting late or at-risk loads, and drafting customer updates for a coordinator to send.
  • EDI and partner integration Onboarding trading partners, mapping EDI and API messages, and fixing the failures that pile up in an integration queue.
  • Customs and compliance data Preparing entry data and classifications for a licensed broker to review. Keeping the evidence trail behind each filing.

How to hire forward deployed engineers for logistics

  1. 01

    Name one flow

Name one flow, such as inbound documents for one mode or exceptions for one customer. Add the operations owner who signs it off and the systems it touches. Sending it is free.

  2. 02

    We read every requirement

We read it ourselves and ask if something is unclear. Then we look through senior people who have applied to us, and our own contacts, for people who fit.

  3. 03

    A shortlist with notes

Each person comes with a CV and a short note on why they fit. Bring a real, messy document sample when you talk to them.

  4. 04

    You choose

Choose who to hire, or no one. You pay only when someone starts, on one agreement and one invoice with us.

Logistics rules to plan around

RuleWhat it means for the build
CBP ACE filingsUS import and export data is filed through CBP's Automated Commercial Environment. Anything feeding a filing keeps a licensed broker in the loop and a record of the source documents.
EDI standardsMany partners still exchange EDI messages. New automation has to produce valid messages, not just readable ones.
Partner data termsCustomer and carrier data often comes with contractual limits on use and sharing. The engineer checks them before data goes to any model provider.
Peak seasonRollouts avoid peak periods. A system that fails in peak costs more than it ever saved.

Hiring in-house vs a forward deployed engineer

Permanent hire

  • Right once automation is a standing team
  • Hard to hire engineers who want to learn freight
  • Slow ramp on partners, modes and edge cases
  • Headcount stays after the first system ships

Forward deployed engineer

  • Chosen by you for operations-heavy work
  • Focused on one flow with a clear finish
  • Measures queue handled, not hours worked
  • You pay our fee only when they start

FAQ

Questions people ask

Which TMS can the engineer work with?

Whatever you run, through its API, EDI, database or file drops. Name your TMS in your requirement, and we look for people who know it or something close.

Can automation file customs entries?

It can prepare the data and evidence. A licensed customs broker stays responsible for the filing.

How do you measure success?

Usually by the share of the queue handled without manual retyping, at an error rate your operations lead accepts. Agree the measure with the person you hire before they start.

Is this for shippers as well as logistics providers?

Yes. Shippers deal with the same documents and exceptions from the other side, often across many carriers and logistics providers.
