Forward deployed engineers for LLM evals

Use cases / Evals

If you cannot measure your AI system, every prompt change is a guess. Forward deployed engineers for LLM evals join your team, part of the week or for a fixed period, and build the test sets and release gates that make quality something you can track. You tell us who you need. We send people who fit.

  • No deposit to get started
  • Every requirement read by us
  • A best-fit shortlist, not a pile of CVs
  • One agreement, one invoice

Why evals come first

Gut feel does not scale test sets do

Many teams judge LLM output by reading a handful of examples. That works until a prompt change fixes one case and quietly breaks others. Or a new model looks better in a demo and worse on the tasks that matter.

A forward deployed engineer builds testing into your development loop. That means test sets from real usage, graders that agree with your experts, and checks that run before anything ships.

Tell us the role and the hours. We send you a shortlist of people who fit.

What the work covers

What forward deployed engineers for LLM evals build

  • Test sets from real usage Cases pulled from production logs and expert examples, labelled with what good looks like, including the hard and the embarrassing ones.
  • Graders that match your experts Code checks where possible and model-based graders where needed. Each one is checked against human labels before anyone trusts it.
  • Regression gates in CI Evals run on every prompt, model or retrieval change, with a pass bar that blocks a release that makes things worse.
  • Production monitoring Sampling live traffic for review, tracking quality over time, and feeding new failures back into the test set.

How hiring an engineer for your evals works

  1. 01

    Send your requirement

Tell us the AI system to measure, whose judgement defines "good", and the decisions the evals should drive, such as model choice. It is free, and there is no deposit.

  2. 02

    Get a shortlist

We read every requirement ourselves and look for people who fit. Then we send a shortlist: each person's CV and a short note on why they fit.

  3. 03

    Talk to them and choose

You talk to whoever you like and choose. Ask each person how they would know their grader is wrong. You do not have to hire anyone.

  4. 04

    Pay only when someone starts

One agreement and one invoice with us, on terms agreed in writing before anything starts. Talent never pays.

What to measure, and why

The right measures depend on the system. These are the questions an eval suite usually has to answer.

QuestionHow it is checked
Is the answer correct?Reference answers, expert labels or task success checks on a fixed test set.
Is it grounded? For RAG and document systems, whether each claim is supported by the retrieved source.
Is it safe?Red-team cases for prompt injection, data leakage and off-policy content, drawn from risk lists such as OWASP's list for LLM applications and the NIST Generative AI Profile.
Is it fast and affordable?Speed and cost per task tracked beside quality, so a better score never hides a slower or pricier system.

An eval platform or a forward deployed engineer

Eval platform on its own

  • Good tooling for running and viewing evals
  • Does not know what good looks like for you
  • Test sets and graders still need building
  • Easy to buy and never fill

Forward deployed engineer

  • Builds the test sets with your experts
  • Checks graders against human judgement
  • Uses the platform you have or a simple harness
  • Leaves evals wired into CI and monitoring

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big does a test set need to be?

Big enough to cover your main task types and known failures. Many teams start small and grow it from production failures. The engineer sizes it with you.

Can we trust an LLM to grade another LLM?

Only after checking it against human labels on your task. The engineer measures how often they agree, and uses code checks wherever they work.

Does the engineer need access to production data?

Real examples make the best test sets. Where data is sensitive, the engineer works with masked samples or synthetic cases checked by your experts.

Will this slow our releases?

Usually the opposite. A trusted eval run lets you ship prompt and model changes with confidence, instead of waiting on manual review.
