Forward deployed engineer tools: the FDE toolkit

Candidate guide

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds software inside a customer's team, so the job touches many tools. These are the forward deployed engineer tools to learn first, plus the enterprise systems you will meet on site.

The toolkit, grouped

  • Build Python first, then TypeScript for interfaces. A web framework, Postgres and a way to deploy.
  • Connect API clients with paging, retries and OAuth. Webhooks you can safely replay.
  • AI A model API, retrieval, agents and an eval harness. Anthropic lists MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills as FDE deliverables.
  • Operate Logs, alerts and a runbook. You are on the hook for what you ship.

The enterprise rules you will hit

The tools are the easy part. On site you meet single sign-on, VPC deployments, IAM policies, data residency rules and compliance regimes such as HIPAA and FedRAMP. An FDE interview guide republished by Harvard career services lists these as what FDE system design really means.

Learn to deploy into an environment you do not control: no admin rights, a change window, a security review. That skill carries over to every customer.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Which language should an FDE learn first?

Python. It is the default language in FDE work. Add TypeScript next.

Do I need to know LangChain?

No. Understanding retrieval, tool use and evals matters more than any one framework.

What is MCP and why do FDEs care?

The Model Context Protocol is a standard for connecting models to tools and data. Anthropic's FDE posting lists MCP servers among the things FDEs deliver.
