Short answer

No employer we checked asks for an FDE certificate

We read FDE postings from OpenAI, Anthropic and Palantir. None list a certification. They ask for engineering experience, customer-facing work and, at the AI labs, production LLM experience. Anthropic's posting asks for "production experience with LLMs including advanced prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks".

A course can still help if you want structure and a deadline. Pick one that makes you ship real projects. Treat the projects, not the badge, as the thing you show employers.

Questions people ask

Is there an official forward deployed engineer certification?

No. Several training companies sell their own FDE certificates. No company that hires FDEs has adopted one as a standard, and none of the postings we read ask for one.

Is there a free forward deployed engineer course?

Not one labelled FDE that we would point to. Anthropic's free courses on GitHub plus Full Stack Open cover the LLM and full-stack parts. Add a real customer project for the rest.

What about a forward deployed engineer bootcamp?

Maven lists a live Forward Deployed Engineering Bootcamp, run as a cohort. A live cohort gives feedback and deadlines, which self-paced content does not.

What about FDE courses on Udemy or Coursera?

Udemy has self-paced courses with FDE in the title. We have not reviewed them. Check each syllabus against the projects above, and skip any that end in a quiz rather than something you shipped.

Is there a forward deployed engineer book?

Not a standard one yet. The best long reads are in-depth newsletter pieces on the role and the hiring guidance companies publish.
