Forward deployed engineers for law firms and legal teams

Industries / Legal

Law firms and in-house legal teams have bought AI tools. Few have someone who can connect them to the document system, the matter data and how lawyers work. Forward deployed engineers for law firms do that. You tell us who you need, and we send people who fit.

  • No deposit to get started
  • Every requirement read by us
  • A best-fit shortlist, not a pile of CVs
  • One agreement, one invoice

Why legal teams use FDEs

The firm's own documents are the advantage

Generic legal AI tools know the law in general. They do not know your precedents, your clause positions, your matters or your clients' playbooks. That knowledge sits in the document management system. Getting at it safely is an engineering job.

A forward deployed engineer works with knowledge management, IT and a few practising lawyers. They build tools on the firm's own material, with ethical walls, privilege and client consent handled properly.

What FDEs fix

Legal work an FDE can own

  • Precedent and clause search Search across your own agreements and briefs, with citations. Filtered by practice group, and honouring ethical walls from the document system.
  • Contract review against playbooks A first-pass review that compares a counterparty draft with your positions. Deviations are flagged for a lawyer to decide.
  • Matter intake and conflicts Structuring new matter requests, pre-filling conflict searches and routing them. Intake teams spend time on judgement, not data entry.
  • Tool integration and rollout Connecting purchased AI tools to your DMS, SSO and billing systems. Then measuring whether lawyers keep using them.

How to hire forward deployed engineers for law firms

  1. 01

Name the tool and the sources

Name the tool, the practice group or legal ops lead who owns it, and the document sources it may use. Include client consent and ethical walls. Sending it is free, with no deposit.

  2. 02

    We read it

We read every requirement ourselves and ask if something is unclear. We then look through the senior people who have applied to us, and our own contacts.

  3. 03

    You get a shortlist

You get each person's CV and a short note on why they fit. Good candidates ask how your DMS handles security before they ask about models.

  4. 04

    You choose

Talk to whoever you like and choose. You do not have to hire anyone. You pay only when someone starts.

Legal rules to plan around

RuleWhat it means for the build
ABA formal opinion on generative AIApplies the existing duties of competence, confidentiality, communication, supervision and reasonable fees to lawyers' use of generative AI.
Confidentiality (ABA Model Rules)Client information sent to an AI tool needs a clear basis. The system logs what was sent where, and honours client-level restrictions.
Ethical wallsSearch and drafting tools must honour the same access restrictions as the document management system.
Citations and accuracyEvery generated statement that could reach a court or a client links back to its source, so a lawyer can check it.

Legal tech vendor vs a forward deployed engineer

Off-the-shelf legal AI vendor

  • Fast to buy and switch on
  • General capability across many firms
  • Integration with your systems is often shallow
  • Customer success team, not your engineer

Forward deployed engineer

  • Builds on your own precedents and playbooks
  • Connects vendor tools to your DMS, SSO and billing
  • Works with your lawyers week by week
  • You own what they build

FAQ

Questions people ask

Will client documents leave our environment?

Only if your risk team approves a provider and the client terms allow it. Many firms start with an approved enterprise model provider or a private deployment.

Can the engineer work with iManage or NetDocuments?

Working through DMS APIs and their security models is a common part of the job. Name your system in your requirement, and we look for people who know it.

We are an in-house legal team, not a firm. Does this fit?

Yes. Contract review, intake and policy search for in-house teams follow the same pattern, often with a contract lifecycle system in place of a DMS.

Who checks the output?

Lawyers do. The engineer builds tools that make checking fast, with sources one click away. Responsibility for legal advice stays with the lawyer.
