IBM Consulting
A pod, not a person
IBM introduced Forward Deployed Units (FDUs) in a newsroom post. It said "IBM has always had FDEs, including Fellows and Distinguished Engineers, embedded directly in client work."
In IBM's words, "An FDU isn't a person; it's a pod". People sit at the edges. Specialist AI agents sit in the middle and handle coding, evaluation, testing and documentation, under human direction.
IBM says FDUs are already at work with Riyadh Air, Nestlé, Heineken and Pearson.

Where the IBM forward deployed engineer fits in a unit
An IBM Think article from IBM Consulting calls FDUs "the bridge between AI platforms and enterprise transformation". It names the roles inside one.
- 01
Client outcome lead
A senior industry or business expert who owns the result the unit is there to deliver.
- 02
Business domain specialist
Brings deep industry and process knowledge, and pushes process owners to rethink their goals.
- 03
Forward-deployed architect
A senior technical leader placed in the client's environment to shape how it adopts AI and platforms.
- 04
Forward-deployed engineer
Brings AI assets, agents and applications together into business solutions, using agentic development methods.
How this compares with other consultancies
Accenture and Deloitte also sell forward deployed engineering through consulting, and they post individual FDE jobs. IBM's public material puts the weight on the unit rather than the single role. It argues that "the rise of the FDE is not the solution, it is the signal."
